From my first travels as a child to Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah, I have always loved the Southwest. I equate the region with skiing, hiking, biking, painting, and sharing experiences with my family and with friends. These experiences have enriched my life. What is more, exploring Colorado and the Four Corners has provided me with so many opportunities for discovery – the landscapes beckon and then humble. They reveal immense distances, call me to move across them, and then remind me that millions of years elapsed during their transformation into their current state.
In my paintings, I seek to capture moments in time, changing cloud formations, vast distances, and the play of light and shadow on configurations of stone, water, trees, and sky.

Every summer my family and I find our way to northern Minnesota. To an island on a large lake, where we listen to the rustling of the birch trees in the wind, spot bald eagles soaring above us, and are startled by hummingbirds whirring from flower to flower in our garden. We are mesmerized by the water lapping up onto the shore, and always stop to admire sunsets when they wash across the sky and lake at the end of the day. As a painter, I’m much inspired by the richness of the colors. I want the sounds and smells to find their way into my paintings . . . Along with the remoteness of the vast forest that surrounds us.

Painting is a performing art.
What always amazes me is how one person viewing my work will be attracted to my restaurant scenes, while another will express a strong connection to my landscapes. As an artist, each pursuit – painting landscapes and figurative work – informs me and helps me determine shapes and value.
It is important for me to get feedback from those viewing my work, it often opens up my mind to new possibilities for future pieces.
I stand when I paint so that I can move away from the canvas and grasp a different perspective. It also helps me stay fluid in my thinking!

What especially attracts me to restaurant scenes is the fact that so many stories are at play. As I snap reference photos (as surreptitiously as possible), I try to capture enough information to convey a moment in time that links people together and that provides insight into their relationships. In my paintings, I want to reveal the personalities and interactions of that exact moment enjoying a meal at a restaurant.

As a gardener and a painter, I often find that I’m drawn to my garden for inspiration or to flowers that I’ve grown and arranged into bouquets. Who would know that there is drama in a garden or for that matter, in a bouquet? I enjoy capturing that drama.
